Obituary of Emma Ferguson Mixon
Emma Ferguson Mixon, 98, a long time resident of Caldwell Parish, passed away on November 16, 2012 at Cornerstone Village South, Inc. in Lafayette, LA.
She was born to the late Green B. Ferguson and Georgia Gardner Ferguson on February 25, 1914, in Grayson, Caldwell Parish, LA. Emma married the late Albert Lorain Mixon in 1952, and they lived together in Grayson, LA until his death in 1976.
Emma graduated from Grayson High School in 1930 then attended LSU and Northwestern State University obtaining her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. She taught at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf for three years and at the Louisiana State School for the Deaf in Baton Rouge for seven years. In 1947, she began teaching at Northeastern Louisiana University until her retirement in 1967.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, Joe Berry Ferguson, William Selby Ferguson, Howard Clifton Ferguson, and George Norris Ferguson, six sisters, Ludie Ferguson, Ona Mae Lafferty, Bettie Taylor, Mabel Bienvenu, Minnie Ola Ferguson, and Annie Lou Cooper, and three nephews, Ray Neal Cooper, Davis Ferguson, Wendell Cooper and one niece, Martha Ann Harris.
She is survived by her sister, Elsie Broussard, three nephews, Joseph Broussard, Joe Berry Cooper, and William Cooper and six nieces, Betty Jo Cantley, Georgia Kirkham, Eve Anne Heaney, Suzanne Broussard, Julia Cooper, and Ewanta Turner and numerous grand nephews and nieces and great-grand nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers will be Joseph "Joe" Broussard, Joe Berry "JB" Cooper, William Cooper, J.L. Broussard, Garland Broussard, and Bradley Broussard.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Louisiana.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia at 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 24, 2012 with Rev. James Carson officiating. Interment will follow at Welcome Home Cemetery in Grayson. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 AM until service time at the funeral home.
