Obituary of Don McGuffee

Funeral services for Don Buren McGuffee, Age 73 of Alexandria will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday January 5, 2013 from the Riser Funeral Chapel in Olla with the Rev. Dennis Snoddy officiating. Graveside interment will follow at the Rosefield Cemetery at Rosefield. Visitation will be held on Monday January 4, 2013 at the funeral home in Olla, from 5 pm to 8 pm. Don Buren McGuffee was born on January 12, 1940 at Enterprise, LA to the union of Colby Buren McGuffee and Neva King McGuffee; and he passed from this life on February 1, 2013 at the Ann Mae Matthews Nursing Facility in Alexandria. As a boy he enjoyed hunting, fishing, as well as catching turtles and frogs. His family moved to California in 1949 for a short period of time and returned to Enterprise with his family in 1954 where they owned and operated the Gulf Station. He enjoyed building and customizing rifles and pistols and participated in various Benchrest and Pistol competitions. Mr. McGuffee was a self trained machinist/gunsmith and had done research work for Sports Afield editor Grits Gresham. He was Hunter Rifle National Champion in 1981, Grand Aggregate - Light Factory Class; and an avid reader of history. In his later years he enjoyed gardening and light machine work. He graduated from Enterprise High School, Class of 1958, and lettered in baseball & basketball, and also went to Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA to play baseball. He passed up a pro-baseball opportunity to help in his family business. He served in the Army, National Guard as a Mechanic and worked at B&W Chevrolet in Tullos, LA 1966-67.He also opened McGuffee Auto Supply with his father in Olla in the early to mid 70's. Mr. McGuffee worked for a brief time on Alaskan Pipeline project Prudhoe Bay Alaska and he also worked offshore for Placid Oil at S/S 207A as a Mechanic, and 10 years at the Black Lake facility. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include, His wife which he married in 1979, Kathleen McDougall , of Alexandria. Don's children, Bart Buren McGuffee (wife Ileen M. McGuffee) of Olla, LA & Lisa Carol McGuffee Edwards (husband Andrew Edwards) of Wyoming; Don's grandchildren: Courtney Elisabeth McGuffee & Colby Buren McGuffee, both of Olla, LA ; his brother Larry McGuffee of W. Monroe, LA ;and nephew, Mark McGuffee. Pallbearers include Carl McDougall, Richard Milton, James Coleman, Mark McGuffee, and Jean Stewart.
