Obituary of Freddy Maurice Mercer, Sr.
Funeral services for Freddy Maurice Mercer, Sr age 84 of Grayson will be held 2:00 PM Monday, January 29, 2018 from the Columbia chapel of Riser & Son Funeral Home with Freddy “Bo Bo” Mercer and Rev. Rick Crandell officiating. Masonic Rites will be held at the funeral home following the officiants. Interment with full military honors will be held at Welcome Home Cemetery at Grayson. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the funeral home from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Freddie Maurice Mercer, Sr was born on February 5, 1933 at Columbia to the union of his parents: Thomas Fred Mercer and Beulah Humphries Mercer and he passed from this life on January 24, 2018 at the Plantation Oaks Nursing Center in Wisner following an extended illness. It is hard to even begin to describe the life of Maurice Mercer. He had the heart of a public servant, he worked for many years as a Deputy/ Radio Dispatch Operator during the administration of Sheriff Floyd “Slim” Hodges and other sheriff's as well. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 384 in Clarks and after it disbanded he was a member of the Columbia Lodge 164. He served in the United States Navy and took a leadership position with the American Legion Post in Columbia for nearly forty years. He also worked for Hatten Tire Center in Columbia for many years. When he was a young man he was injured in an auto accident which left him handicapped but his attitude was one of being able to conquer anything. He was a loving husband to his late wife, Ann Morrow Nugent Mercer and a loving son, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Maurice was truly a servant to the community around him and he will never be forgotten. He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-brother, Robert Thompson. He was also a member of the Grayson Baptist Church.
Left to cherish a lifetime of memories are his children: Freddy Maurice “Bo Bo” Mercer, Jr. and his wife, Rosetta of Grayson; two daughters: Teresa Lane and husband, Ken of Haughton and Freda Boyles of Grayson; his brother, Bobby Joe Mercer and wife, Ann of Grayson; his sister, Mrs. Linda Gail Gilliam of Olla; six grandchildren: David Boyles and wife, Angie, Christopher “Chris” Lane and wife, Shannon, Randall Scott Mercer and wife, Lindsey, Nicia Bamburg and husband, Scott, Donna Boyles and Curt Lane and wife, Francine.
Serving as pallbearers will be Christopher Lane, Curt Lane, Bennie Douglas, Randall Scott Mercer, Fred Mercer and Fred Grant. Honorary pallbearers include Mitch Bratton, Randy Hatten, Charles Wayne Franklin,Glenn Guillory, Jake Sanders, Terry Masters and Jimmy Gaylor.
