Obituary of Robert Bennett

Robert Bennett, a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on May 25, 2019. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday May 29, 2019, from the sanctuary of Columbia Heights Baptist Church, Columbia, LA, with Bro. Warren Maxwell officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Burroughs Garden of Memories Cemetery in Columbia under the direction of Riser & Son Funeral Home of Columbia.Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday at Riser & Son Funeral Home and at the church on Wednesday from 11:00 AM until time of service.

Robert is survived by his wife of 58 years, Laverne Bennett; sons, Kevin and wife, Sandra, Shannon and wife, Vicki; grandchildren, Kaleb Bennett and wife, Bridgette, Ashton Smith and husband, Heath, Summer Bennett, Zach Bennett and wife, Lauren, Morgan Ferris and husband, Chris and Trace Bennett; great-grandchildren, Abram, Jude, Elijah, Finley, Olivia, Macey, Nate, Drake, and Emeryson. Brother, Ronald Bennett and sister, Maureen Brownell.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Laura Elizabeth Bennett; brothers, A.J. and Joe Bennett; and sisters, Mildred Lively and Louise Mills.

Robert was born on May 26, 1936, in Columbia, LA. He served his country honorably in the US Army from 1959-1962 being officially discharged in February, 1965. He was involved in the Cuban Missile crisis and Berlin Wall. He began his career with the state of Louisiana at Angola Prison and retired from the state of Louisiana elections department in 1990. Robert was a member of Columbia Heights Baptist Church and the Howard Sunday School class. Robert loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He had a great sense of humor. 

Pallbearers will be Kaleb Bennett, Zach Bennett, Trace Bennett, Vernon McMillan, Waymon Calhoun and Bob Wallace.

Special thanks to the care given to him by the nurses and aids of Compassus Hospice. RN Amy Mckenzie and CNA Vickie treated him with respect and dignity during these last several weeks.
