Obituary of Perry Smith

Funeral services for Perry Hardy Smith, age 74, of Columbia, will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Columbia with Pastor Ben McGehee officiating. Graveside service will follow at 2:00 PM at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Winnfield. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the church under the direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. Perry was born November 29, 1937, to Samuel and Leda Gorum Smith in Winnfield and he passed from this life at Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe after a lengthy illness. He had an outstanding career in banking, having retired as President of Citizen's Progressive Bank in 1999. He was a former member of the Louisiana Junior Banking Association and Louisiana Banker's Association. He graduated from Northwestern in 1959 and was a graduate of LSU Banking School of the South. He was an avid golfer and loved the outdoors, especially duck and quail hunting. In his later years, along with his wife, he enjoyed square dancing with his friends until his illness. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbia. He was preceded in death by his two infant children: John and Elizabeth Smith, and his parents. He is survived by his wife of fifty-one years: Charlotte Holmes Smith of Columbia; son, George Holmes Smith and his wife, Beverly of Magnolia, TX; three brothers: Benny Smith and his wife, Beth, Jerry T. Smith and his wife, Sherrye, and Sammy Smith and his wife, Mitzi, all of Winn Parish; grandchild: Matthew Smith of Magnolia, TX; brother-in-law: Shove Holmes and his wife, Jimmye; five nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Cole Smith, Trenton Smith, Trevor Smith, Hal Birdwell, Scott Meredith, Mark Meredith, Philip Wilkins, and Tommy Parker. Honorary Pallbearers will be the directors and employees of Citizen's Progressive Bank. Larry Carr, Henry Byrd, and his many other golfing buddies will also serve. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church of Columbia or a charity of your choice.
