Obituary of Mamye Louise Wilkes
Funeral services For Mamye Louise Wilkes will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at the Grayson Baptist Church in Grayson, Louisiana. Rev. Oda "Tuck" Roberts will be the officiating minister, assisted by Rev. Jay Morgan and Rev. Rick Crandall. A special friend, Rev. Rose Sheridan, will say the closing prayer. Services are under the direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia.
Mamye Louise was born September 2, 1924, to the union of B.M. Wilkes and Nell Volentine Wilkes in Columbia, Louisiana. Mamye graduated from Grayson High School in 1941 and Louisiana College in 1944.
Miss Wilkes was very active in all the programs of Grayson Baptist Church. She was a church pianist for over thirty years.
Mamye taught school at Grayson High School and Grayson Elementary School for more than thirty years. She taught the first class for handicapped children in Caldwell Parish. She taught in many other areas for many years before retiring again in 2008. Miss Wilkes received the Caldwell Parish Older Worker Legacy Achievement Award in 2005. She was a charter member of the Gamma Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International. She was also a member of the Caldwell Parish Retired Teachers Association.
Miss Wilkes traveled extensively abroad the United States. She will long be remembered by her students and friends.
Pallbearers will be Gil Broussard, Don Burns, Terry Johnston, Ken Lane, John McKeithen, Tommy Parker, Tony Walters, and Gary Watts.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Robin Causey, Daryl Delcore, Vella Gene Grant, Lewis Hodges and Godfrey Whitten.
Visitation will be held from 8:00 AM until service time Tuesda morning at Grayson Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, it was Miss Wilke's wish that donations be made to Grayson Baptist Church, P.O. Bos 359, Grayson, LA 71435.
