Obituary of Mary "Berta" Holmes

Funeral services for Mary "Berta" Holmes, age 80, of Columbia, will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, December 10, 2013 from the chapel of Riser Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Craig Franklin and Rev. Travis Sanders officiating. Interment will follow at Welcome Home Cemetery in Grayson. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the funeral home. Berta was born November 29, 1933 to Joe and Dorlis Finley Holmes of Columbia and she passed from this life on December 8, 2013 at her residence in Columbia. She was retired from General Motors. She was a lifelong member of Bellview Baptist Church in Columbia where Rev. Mark Dannehl ministered to her. She was an avid reader and loved to watch butterflies and hummingbirds. She also loved to quilt. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister: Henrietta Richmond. She is survived by her son: Joseph William Kirby of Valdosta, GA; two daughters: Janette Herbert and her husband Paul of Heislerville, NJ; Wanda Rowland and her husband Earl of Columbia; brother: Benny Joe Holmes of Columbia; three sisters: Josie Richmond of Columbia; Betty Byrd of Houma; Aliene Hancock of Missouri; six grandchildren: Chad Granger, Christy Kirby, Nicholas Linn Rowland, Hank David Rowland, Sarah Herbert, and Daniel Herbert; three great-grandchildren: Colten Linn Rowland, Jacob Rowland, and Chase Pepper. Pallbearers will be Janette Herbert, Paul Herbert, Wanda Rowland, Earl Rowland, Daniel Herbert, Sarah Herbert, Nick Rowland and Hank Rowland. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jacob Rowland and Colten Rowland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bellview Baptist Church.
