The Marines and family of 2-F-23 (Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marines) extend their deepest condolences to the family.
HL joined 2-F-23 at Camp Pendleton, California, just as the brand new 4th Marine Division was forming. Though he was wounded in a training accident on Maui in April 1944, he made the 15 June landing at Saipan and was wounded the next day. He returned to make the Iwo Jima landing in February 1945, this time as a corporal and leader of a four-man fire team - the very tip of the spear for the Marine Corps, and the key to victory on Iwo Jima. He was wounded again on the company's final day of offensive combat in WWII.
We are grateful for his contributions to the forthcoming book on his rifle company, 2-F-23.
